If you feel like your body suddenly changed overnight during perimenopause, you are not imagining it. Many women notice increased belly fat, changes in body composition, and weight gain even when they are eating the same and exercising the same. It's not about willpower; it's often a sign of changing hormones and a frequent challenge for women over 40.

In this episode, we break down:

why perimenopause weight gain happens
how estrogen affects fat storage
the role of cortisol and stress hormones
insulin resistance in perimenopause
why “eat less and move more” often backfires
what your body may actually need in midlife

This is not about laziness or lack of discipline. Your hormones, metabolism, stress response, and energy regulation are shifting during perimenopause and menopause.

If you’re struggling with midlife weight gain, belly fat over 40, hormonal weight gain, or menopause symptoms, this video will help you understand what’s happening in your body.

If you feel like your body suddenly started storing weight around your middle like a spare tire And nothing you're doing seems to be working anymore. This is one of the most frustrating things that women in perimenopause experience. Because you're eating the same, moving the same, doing the same things that used to work, but they just don't anymore. This is not just about willpower, and it's not simply that you're doing anything wrong. For a lot of women, this is one of the most common changes in perimenopause. And this usually comes with a few key things that change during this time. In this video, I want to help you understand why your body starts storing weight differently, what hormones have to do with it, and why it feels like your body changed the rules overnight. And this is the part that can feel the most defeating because you know what has worked before. And now you feel like you're doing the exact same things and getting totally different results. For me, it was clothes. I had to buy new jeans six months apart because I couldn't fit into them. And this is the kicker. I was training for a marathon. I was running. I was doing all the cardio that I could, and I was still gaining weight. My body just kept shifting, especially around my waist and my hips. And when the hot flashes started and the trouble sleeping, I was able to put it all together and realize that this was all perimenopause. And for some women, the scale barely moves, just the way your body distributes fat changes. All of this can be super frustrating but one question remains, why is this happening now? This is where we need to zoom out for a second because your body is not just changing how much weight it stores but where it stores it. And that shifts for a reason. Estrogen plays a role in fat distribution. When estrogen is stable, fat distribution is throughout the subcutaneous tissues. But as estrogen begins to fluctuate and decline, your body becomes more likely to store fat centrally around your abdomen or what we call visceral fat. And on its own, that change in estrogen changes the preference for where your body wants to store fat. At the same time as estrogen fluctuates, you lose your stress buffer. So when estrogen drops, cortisol, your stress hormone, can stay elevated longer. And when cortisol stays elevated, that signals to your body,"Hey, we need to hold on fat." And guess where it's gonna go? Around your middle. And one other piece of this puzzle comes in, insulin. Insulin sensitivity can shift in this time as well. And this means your body is not processing and using energy in the same way that it used to. So now you have several things happening all at once. Estrogen is shifting, cortisol is staying elevated longer, and your body is using energy differently. And the result, your body responds differently even though your habits have not changed. And this is the part that a lot of us miss because it's not just that where your fat storage is has changed. It's how we use energy that has shifted as well. Which means you can be eating exactly the same way, you can be exercising the same that you've done over the past 10 years, and your body is responding differently And it takes more exercise to achieve the same results. And this is why it is so frustrating because from your perspective, nothing's changed. But from your body's perspective, a lot has changed. And when those things mismatch, it can feel like nothing makes sense anymore. For a lot of women, this isn't just about how their body looks. It's about feeling like they've lost control over something that used to make sense. And how about you? Has it changed for you? And if so, did it feel like all of a sudden this weight appeared out of nowhere? Or slowly did you start noticing these changes coming on? Let me know in the comments. Because both patterns are actually very common, but they feel very different when you're the one experiencing them. So what do most women do, and what are they told by their provider? They double down. They eat less and they move more. They push harder And unfortunately, that approach actually works against our body the way it is responding now. Because when we eat less, we have less fuel, and we move more, we have more activity, that signals cortisol. Cortisol stays higher, and what does cortisol tell the body to do? Hold onto fat. We need more energy. Our body's stressed. We need to hold onto it. So what does that do? Puts more weight around your middle. So your doctor who tells you,"You just need to move more and eat less," doesn't understand this midlife shift, doesn't understand what is going on in your hormones and why this backfires for you. So instead of asking,"Why am I not responding like I used to?" We need to ask better questions. What does my body need more of now? Because this is not about calories in and calories out. It is about hormones and how hormones respond to the stressors. And when you understand that, you can start making decisions that actually work for your body the way it is working now. So naturally, the next question is, well, what do I do about it? And this needs to be a whole nother video, but it means resistance training, building our muscles. It means eating protein, and it means getting adequate rest. Let's do a whole nother video on that one'cause it is so important. Let's take a breath because if this is happening to you, it can be super frustrating. There is a reason why this is happening, And it's not because you're lazy, it's not because you lack discipline, and it's not because you did something wrong. The rules didn't disappear, they just changed. once we understand that, we can start working with our bodies again instead of against it. If this helped you connect some of the dots and you wanna hear more about how to combat this midlife weight gain, make sure you subscribe for the next episode. Thanks again for watching, and I'll see you next time.
